August 2016 Employees at the 5K Fun Run

5K Fun Run

Over 200 Employees, along with their family members and friends, signed up to participate in the 5K Fun Run on Saturday, July 30th at Coyote Point Park. Nearly 300 people packed the park to cheer on the runners; participate in Zumba, CrossFit and other exercise classes; test their strength in the inflatable obstacle course; or just simply enjoy the beautiful scenery. Regional Internship Program

On July 13th, the Two-County Next Generation Committee of Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties hosted an Intern Session for nearly 50 emerging professionals from 13 different public sector agencies, focused on “How to Land the Job.” The event was held at the majestic Portola Valley Community Center and was facilitated by the Daly City Assistant City Manager, Julie Underwood, and Felicia Flores from our Human Resources Department. June 2016 participants at Hack-SMC


The County’s 2nd Annual civic-tech hackathon, Hack-SMC, was held on Saturday, May 21st at GSVlabs in Redwood City. A total of 77 participants formed 31 teams to create mobile apps or websites that would improve the lives of residents in San Mateo County. The top 5 teams each won a $1,500 prize and will advance to the Apps Challenge in September where they will present a finished app to a panel of judges and compete for a $5,000 grand prize. Competencies for HR Success!

Congratulations are in order for the eight members of our Personnel Services Division who graduated from the Northern California Chapter of the International Public Management Association-Human Resources (IPMA-HR) "Developing Competencies for HR Success" training program.  The 3-day program covered competencies required to be a successful HR Expert, Leader, Business Partner, and Change Agent.

Our team members will now prepare to take the examination to achieve the highly-regarded designation of IPMA-CP (Certified Professional).

Increasing transparency with the new Contract Management System

The Contract Management System (CMS) prototype is nearly finished. With oversight from the CMS Steering Committee, departments and contract teams continue to participate in design and development discussions and provide feedback during beta system previews. Our two pilot departments, Human Services Agency and San Mateo Medical Center, are on schedule to start training in May. CMS prototype testing and refinements will take place through June; onboarding for the remaining departments is planned for July through December 2016.

Growing the Next Generation – County Hosts Job Shadow Day

As part a Two County Next Generation Committee initiative, on February 18, 2016, the Human Resources partnered with Sequoia High School to host the County’s inaugural High School Job Shadow Day. Over 25 students from Sequoia High School’s AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) program joined us to learn more about County government and future career opportunities.
