According to a report published by the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), Onboarding New Employees: Maximizing Success, “one of the most important ways organizations can improve the effectiveness of (staff) is through the strategic use of onboarding. Onboarding is the process of helping new hires adjust to social and performance aspects of their new jobs quickly and smoothly.” They continue by saying “Research and conventional wisdom suggest the faster new hires feel welcome and prepared for their jobs, the faster they will be able to successfully contribute...”

With this thinking in mind, the Employee Onboarding Committee created a framework for the  future of onboarding in SMC; a few highlights include:

  • Guides and Checklists for Managers/Supervisors and  New Employees - the guides and checklists will outline what to do/expect and why to prepare for an employees’ start and to integrate the employee to the organization and the job.
  • New Employee Website – a website will be accessible to employees before starting work , if they choose. The website will feature a welcome and departmental videos, links to policies, and employee benefits and work-life programs. Now available at
  • Redesigned New Employee Welcome – the revamped Welcome will be more of a social networking event connect new employees with members of department leadership, while maintaining the valuable resource and information tables.
