The Supported Training & Employment Program (STEP) for Former Foster Youth is an internship program sponsored by the Human Services Agency (HSA) and the Human Resources Department. The purpose of the program is to introduce former foster youth who are at risk of underemployment to “the world of work.” The program focuses on four areas:

  1. Job readiness and skills building

  2. Job shadowing and employment coaching

  3. Hands-on, paid work experience in one of several possible County departments

  4. Transition planning

Intern Information

  • Requirements: Must be a youth age 18-24 and be a current, non-minor dependent (AB12) or former foster youth who aged out of foster care. (Candidates must submit proof of foster care status upon request.) 
  • Duration: Flexible
  • Hours: Flexible
  • Location: Across various department locations in San Mateo County
  • How to Apply: The internship opportunity will be posted online at http://jobs.smcgov.org when the application period begins. There are two cohort entries - Summer and Winter.

Coach Information

The program could not support the interns without amazing Coaches! Coaches are current County employees that opt-in to supervise and train STEP interns through expectation and goal-setting, ongoing professional development opportunities, and supportive feedback and coaching.
